The Rumonge Market - @wbull
A market town in southern Burundi on the shores of Lake Tanganyika, Rumonge has deep roots in the ancient Arab slave trade and is still a center for an ethnic Arab and Muslim population. Since the suspension of NGOs in Burundi, there are very few European or American visitors to this little known corner of Africa. This series came from several trips to the market there with members of the sewing cooperative at Village Health Works, where I volunteer as a photographer, to purchase the famous kitenge fabric which they fashion into the clothing worn so stylishly and proudly by the local people.
