Rhyl is a seaside town on the North Wales coast. Most of the photographs people take of this town are of the beach and sunsets over the sea. However, I wanted to show Rhyl in a different light.
For me Rhyl has a cinematic quality that is often overlooked. I have always believed that it would make a wonderful backdrop for film makers.
Subsequently I looked closely into the film noir genre which uses several visual tropes including chiaroscuro lighting, unusual angles, strong compositions, shadows and reflections. Because of this I knew I wanted all the images to be black and white.
I aimed to create images which looked as if they could be cinematic stills taken from a film noir motion picture.
The images were taken over a period of six years.
