Gold Medal in the category « Street Night Shot »
All eyes on you. Constantly. China, driven by his president Xi Jinping, established an unprecedented social control system. Among other things, this system is reflected by the presence of millions of surveillance cameras throughout the country. You can’t walk more than 20 meters without bumping into one. Upsetting. Streets are controlled, but not only. Bars, clubs, restaurants are also being watched. Xi’s eyes are here to maintain order in those overcrowded cities. It’s hard to feel completely free and let yourself absorbed by the flow. There’s always a part of your privacy that is being flouted because even the most harmless strolls come under his eyes. My eyes felt it. I felt it. I felt observed. I felt violated. And my camera acted upon. As a defence against the intrusion. My eyes challenged those perverse eyes. My free and fantasy world versus their repression-based one.
