What a night it was. It was the first time ever that I attended this Luxembourgish tradition in person. While my dad and I rushed through the windy open field to reach the event, we saw from the distance that the first fire torches has already been thrown into the 5 meter high wooden structure. Having only a little time span left, I grabbed my cam and captured this photo series. After only 10 minutes the structure has completely collapsed under the flames. On “Buergsonndeg” (“Castle Sunday”), which in 2023 falls on 26 February, wooden castles and crosses are being set alight across the country to drive away the winter and ring in the spring time. Thousands of people flock to witness the traditional lent celebration each year and preparations often already start soon after New Year’s. The Buergbrennen bonfires are an age-old pagan tradition later incorporated into the Roman Catholic calendar. The fires represent rebirth, mark the end of winter and are meant to melt away the snow of the old year and herald the coming of a new season.
