Rush hour at the Alisher Navoi metro (Tashkent, Uzbekistan)
Tashkent is the capital of Uzbekistan. Its metro opened in 1977 - the first metro in Central Asia. Many of the stations feature distinctive architecture, depicting aspects of Uzbekistan’s history.
This photo was taken in the Alisher Navoi station, named after the 15th century Uzbek poet. The repeated ornate domed pattern in the ceiling echoes the mosques of the time.
I spent a few hours photographing various stations. This station was incredibly busy. As people started to come off the train, I crouched down at the exit of the platform, and captured their movement from a low standpoint - taking in people from many walks of life, together with the repeated patterns of the surrounding decor depicting their history.
