Oktoberfest in Munich, locally called Wiesn, is officially the largest party in the world. It set a record with 7.2 million attendees from all around the world in 2023. The festival originated in celebration of Kronprinz Ludwig's wedding to Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen in 1820 and it has grown and evolved ever since. Such is It's popularity that Hitler claimed it as a symbol of his vision in 1938. It is all things to all Bavarians: A fairground family outing, a celebration of Bavarian symbolism and cultural heritage, food and drink. It is also a place to find and celebrate love, and of course a place to get absolutely hammered.
While documenting the festival I got to see parts of the machine that runs this event. While the whole thing screams of joy, there is also sexualized fun, a class-divided labor market and of course the overarching vibe of gluttony.
