In the neighborhood of San Juan de Aragón, the annual reenactment of the Battle of May 5th not only revives the history of the battle between Mexico and France, but it also blends tradition, creativity, and a touch of surrealism. This event, which has been a part of Mexico City's cultural fabric for over a century, draws hundreds of participants and spectators who immerse themselves in a recreation where echoes of the past intertwine with unexpected, contemporary elements.
Just as 164 years ago in Puebla, the Zacapoaxtlas, with their faces darkened by gunpowder, once again confront the French army in this reenactment. These Zacapoaxtlas, portrayed as the brave soldiers who defended Mexico in the Battle of May 5th, march steadfastly to the rhythm of brass band music under the strong rays of the sun. Taking to the streets alongside the soldiers of the Army of the East and their French rivals, these warriors fill the air with the thunderous roar of their muskets, leaving a deafening sound and a trail of white smoke behind, as the scent of gunpowder permeates the atmosphere unmistakably.
