Santa María de Jesús is a small village located in the Guatemalan Highlands, not far from the tourist hub of Antigua. While visiting Antigua, I decided to take a taxi out to Santa María to see a slice of life away from the tourist hustle. While wandering around the town, I caught the familiar scent of freshly-made tortillas, and I followed my nose into a storefront where two young women were pressing and cooking tortillas by hand. Watching over them was an elderly gentleman who happened to be their grandfather. He had a strikingly rugged look, with his cowboy hat and weathered, dark skin.
