I find myself attracted to subjects separated from me by a sheet of glass, with their varied expressions of wonder, skepticism, curiosity, and even despair. Quite often, I sense a temporary disconnect from the here and now, as that person is absorbed in thoughts far away from what lays in plain sight. What are they all thinking? What mystery lies beyond the frame? Is the story right there in front of them, is it in the past, or is it in a distant daydream?
And then, there’s the matter of perspective. Are my subjects separated from me, or am I separated from them? Is the window more for my benefit, providing a shield for me to observe with confidence? Perhaps, it may even isolate me from what may be awkward or threatening. On the other hand, is it a protective barrier for the subject of each photo, insulating them from the complexities of life? Or is it an aperture through which the vast realm of possibilities are seen? Is it a portal to the story yet to come?
