By chance I found myself in Naples on the first Saturday of May, discovering that the so-called ‘Miracle of San Gennaro - the rite of the liquefaction of the saint’s blood- is celebrated in the city three times a year , not only on September 19, the day of the feast of San Gennaro. During these celebrations, the ampoule containing the martyr’s blood in a solid state is extracted from a safe located in the Cathedral and the archbishop of Naples begins to shake it with abrupt movements until the solid blood becomes liquid. Failure to liquefy seems to be a bad omen. Fortunately, it almost always happens. The Church has always maintained a very cautious attitude towards this phenomenon, while celebrating the rite with solemnity. The May miracle of San Gennaro involves the procession of the relics and the ampoules of the Patron Saint from the Cathedral to the Basilica of Santa Chiara, in the heart of the historic center of Naples. It is celebrated, in fact, in memory of the first translation of the relics of the saint from the cemetery of Agro Marciano to Naples, where the relics are preserved today. Between faith, tradition and superstition, the miracle of the blood is awaited with amazed eyes by the faithful, the curious and the tourist. Also on May 4, 2024 a river of people and colors crossed the historic center during the procession of the 'infrascati', so called because in the past the participants were used to protect their heads with crowns of flowers. Strolling through the street shops and restaurants, the associations of devotees parade with the Holy Patrons on their shoulders, hieratic or absent-minded clerics parade, San Gennaro and the sacred relic, the town band, the institutions with the carabinieri in full uniform, the Virgin Mary ...
